Pray For Silence by Linda Castillo

Pray for Silence (2010) is the second novel in Linda Castillo’s Kate Burkholder mystery series. I read the first book Sworn to Silence a few years ago and loved it. And what really sold me, in addition to the writing and the small town Amish community setting, was the chemistry between Police Chief Kate Burkholder and Ohio State Agent John Tomasetti.

And in book two, Pray for Silence, Tomasetti arrives in Painters Mill, Ohio to help Kate solve a gruesome crime. The Plank family are Amish and all 7 members, the parents and 5 children, are found tortured and killed in their home. This case hits home for Kate and John because of the horror, but also because both detectives have demons. Police Chief Kate Burkholder grew up in an Amish household but was forced to leave, exiled at 18. And State Agent John Tomasetti’s trauma is particularly bad. He lost his wife and two daughters several years back when a drug dealer decided to take revenge.

When Pray for Silence begins Tomasetti is barely holding up. Kate calls him in for help on the Plank murders but he neglects to tell her that due to his panic attacks he has been suspended unless he completes mandatory therapy. In the meantime Tomasetti is not supposed to be working on cases, but that doesn’t stop him.

Truth be told, I didn’t care for Pray for Silence. The brutality of the Plank family murders was disturbing enough, but the novel turns even darker once the investigation begins and we learn in detail why they were killed. But I retain very fond memories of book one in the series, Sworn to Silence. And with that in mind I will be heading on to book three Breaking Silence in a few months.

  1. Not every book in this series is as dark as this one. And Kate’s and Tomasetti’s relationship continues to grow with each book. I like them.

    1. I like John and Kate too and I sense Breaking Silence though dark won’t be as dark.

  2. I’ve had this series on my TBR for what seems like forever and keep passing over it. I was kind of afraid that the novels might be a little too much of the “cozy” variety. From what you say about this one, sounds like I made a bad assumption about them. I hope Book Three works better for you.

  3. This series is not cozy by any means LOL. But based on the first novel Sworn To Silence I would definitely recommend it. But a mistake imo to start with book two, Pray For Silence. Linda Castillo is such a good writer and further proof that we are in a golden age these days for mystery series.

  4. At first, I was thinking that this would be a great new series for me to embrace, and then I read about the murders and torture and that is just to grim. I don’t need cozy mysteries, but I also don’t need nightmares! I may look to Sworn to Silence though.

    1. it is a great series and Sworn to Silence hooked me but Pray For Silence is not the place to begin. I should say that online you can find the lifetime film version of Sworn To Silence starring Neve Campbell. Great movie and Neve Campbell does a great job portraying Chief of Police Kate Burkhokder.

  5. Whoa that’s a lot of darkness in the plot! Maybe it should be titled Pray for No More Killings! But I like the Amish aspect of the story. Book setting sin Amish country are always a big plus. I hope Book 3 is better for you.

  7. I read the first book in this series. It was too violent for me, but I liked how it was written and I got involved in the series. I have the next two books to read… someday.

    1. I loved the first book in tne series but Pray For Silence let me down because the violence took over the whole book for me. But I definitely want to read book 3 because I sense Castillo will not continue with cases as dark as book two.
