The Pitt on HBO Max

Normally I review books at this site but I just wanted to say a few words about the hot new medical drama The Pitt.

What makes The Pitt must watch TV? The writing of course. It is being called the most accurate medical drama ever to appear on TV. Real life doctors, nurses, EMT workers etc are praising this show all over the internet. They feel seen.

And then there is the actor Noah Wyle at the helm who is also an executive producer on The Pitt. We all loved him as Dr John Carter from his ER days. And now in his 50’s Wyle plays Dr Michael Rabinovitch (Dr Robbie).

And as with Dr Carter from long ago, Wyle portrays Dr Robbie on The Pitt as a talented compassionate doctor but there are differences. Dr Robbie unlike Dr Carter runs the ER and has been doing so for decades and he doesn’t have Dr Carter’s hesitancy, self consciousness, people pleasing style etc. Robbie is not afraid to get mad at his staff when he feels they have screwed up. He’s very much a man in charge and fans are beginning to resent Dr. Robbie in season two for his testiness and lack of patience. Is the job getting to him? If so he is not one to ask for help.

Noah Wyle’s performance as Dr Robbie is a great plus for The Pitt. But the storyline that really got to me from last night’s episode involved Dr Melissa (Mel) King, her sister Becca and Dr. Langdon. I won’t go into the plot but suffice it to say that Becca is autistic and Mel has been a great caregiver to her sister. Their Mom passed away a few years ago and its all been on Mel to take care of Becca. Last night’s episode drove home how hard caregiving can be and how we live in a country that offers very little help to caregivers.

I can’t wait for Episode 11!

  1. This is an awesome drama. Noah Wyle is a favorite of mine, so I’d watch most anything with him in it. But oh, this is good. 😀

  2. I’ve been hearing good things about this show, and your post just seals the deal. However, I will probably wait until it is available on DVD. I tried watching The Gilded Age on HBO Max, and the commercials just about ruined it for me. I ended up getting the DVDs from the library, which was perfect.

My son subscribes to HBO Max, and it really bugs me that they now have commercials and you have to pay more to get it ad-free.

Rant over–the show does sound great.

  3. Oh good post. Yes caregiving has got to be one of the toughest things people do. I saw that with my parents’ care. I haven’t watched this show yet … maybe because it’s a medical show. Hospitals give me a bit of the heebee-jeebees … but it seems a quality show … so perhaps I’ll try it. thx

    1. thanks and I agree I want to stay out of hospitals too. Heck I avoid doctors as well which is not wise. But I do like TV doctors LOL and the Pitt has such a great cast and stories.

  4. I love it when a new drama grips me. I’m a Star Trek fan through and through so loved Strange New Worlds. But I’m now enjoying a US drama from 40 years ago, The Equalizer, set in your home city of course. Was a huge fan back then and am now loving it all over again.

Having been away for a while I didn’t know you’d changed your blog, anyway, found you again!

  5. Hi Cath. I did create a new blog. I was kind of forced into it when something went wrong with the prior blog and cant post anymore. But its still online.

Im a big Star Trek Fan too and my favorite character was Dr McCoy. I must see if I can locate the Equalizer. Have you watched Mare of Eastown. Its a 7 episode series that came on HBO a few years ago and I’m still thinking about it. Kate Winslet is wonderful. She plays a detective in a Philidelphia town down on its heels neighborhood and the rest of the cast very good as well.

  6. Really sorry that problems posting meant you had to abandon your blog, that’s sad.

I don’t know Mare of Eastown, no, but I think I knew that Kate Winslet had made some kind of crime based TV show. I’ll look out for it. The Equalizer is well worth searching out. Edward Woodward was excellent in it and so interesting to see people like Christian Slater, Adam Ant, Meatloaf, turn up in various epsiodes. And I like seeing New York onscreen. I’ve also just started watching Haven. Have you seen that?

  7. Thanks Cath. The blog is still up and hopefully it stays up but I am happy I am posting here.

I cant stress enough how great Mare of Eastown was. I am sorry only one season but I am glad to have had the season. Haven’t seen Haven but I will look into it.
